The City of Cocoa Beach, as of the 2001 Census, has just 2.6% of the County population. (Click "here" for the State of Florida's Census Quick Facts.) This is significant because most use taxes and sales taxes are collected by the State of Florida. Revenue sharing then results in a portion being returned to Brevard County, which in turn distributes a portion to municipalities based on population.

Cocoa Beach's first real settlement in was started by a family of newly freed slaves following the Civil War. A hurricane in 1885 discouraged settlement. In 1888, a group of Cocoa Beach Florida men bought the entire tract of land. The land remained untouched until an attorney named Gus Edwards arrived. He bought Cocoa Beach and began to develop it.

City of Cocoa Beach was established on June 5, 1925. It was incorporated as a City on June 29, 1957.
